Syria … rejecting political initiatives and increasing violence

Rejecting political initiatives, the regime only increases its violence.
At the time of writing, 20 people have been martyred in Syria today: 17 from Homs, 1 from Hama, and 2 from Idlib, Sarmeen.

Homs, the besieged city at the centre of the revolution for the last three months, is infested by security checkpoints and barriers, and now endures a new wave of violence: Shabiha and security forces have indiscriminately killed more than 20 martyrs in the last 2 days, and continue their terror tactics of bomb blasts and gunfire. In addition there have been dozens of arbitrary arrests in violent raids on people’s homes, together with mass arrests at the growing number of security barriers in the city’s various neighbourhoods.

However, all this violence failed to prevent or even reduce the number and size of demonstrations in several neighbourhoods across the city, where there was also a general strike.

In the security forces’ latest attempt to hunt down Hama’s Attorney General Adnan Bakour – he had broadcast a video testifying to mass graves and details of violations by the security foces in storming Hama – they stormed villages and towns in Hama and Idlib, and killed many people. Yesterday they also stormed the village of Tal Ma’arof in Qamishli, the worldwide religious centre of the Naqshbandi, a major Islamic spiritual order.

Security forces continued their attacks on activists and arrested many who have been active from the beginning of the protests. All possible methods were used, ranging from campaigns of violent raids on houses and farms to the arbitrary arrest of dozens of people in various cities and towns. Another method, intended to force activists to turn themselves in, is to kidnap their families.

In addition, the suffering of doctors and injured patients continues as security forces keep up their campaign against them. This includes the forced closure of the accident and emergency department and and operating theatres in Al-Fateh Hospital at the Eastern Gouta in the Damascus suburbs. This hospital has been prominent in treating people injured during protests in the Eastern Gouta, the area that used to have some of the largest demonstrations. Security forces and Shabiha also arrested the manager of Hamdan Hospital in Douma, and are now hunting the manager of Al-Fateh Hospital as well as a number of doctors who were “just doing their job and abiding by the Medical Oath”, in the words of a statment published a week ago by the Co-ordination Committee of the Doctors of Damascus.

At a new security checkpoint on the international highway between Banyas and Latakia, security agents are conducting thorough vehicle searches.
